Is deep tissue massage painful ?
No, good massage is always done within the pain tolerance of each individual. Therefore, effective communication is key to a pleasant massage experience. This does not mean that the hour is filled with constant chatter; rather it means that I will ask for feedback as to the pressure that I am using. I use a simple number scale to ascertain the correct pressure for each client with 1 being almost no pressure and 10 being excruciatingly painful. Generally, most people find the range from 5 to 7 to be therapeutic.

How is massage helpful?
Human touch has been known to be a powerful healing modality for thousands of years beginning with the Chinese about 4,000 years ago. We know that massage increases blood flow which speeds the healing process as it oxygenates all body tissues and carries away metabolic wastes which are then either eliminated or reprocessed.

Do I have to get completely undressed?
No. I ask all my clients to disrobe except for their underpants. You will be draped the entire time and only the part of body on which I am working will be exposed.

How often should I have a massage?
The answer depends completely on you; your schedule, your budget, the kinds of activities you engage in. I have some clients who get weekly massages, others come 2 times a month and others come on a monthly basis.

How is your massage different from that of other massage therapists?
Due to my interest in anatomy, I tend to be somewhat more familiar with how the body moves than many (but not all) massage therapists. I attempt to understand client complaints in light of my anatomical understanding. This fact, combined with my ability to gently stretch all major muscle groups, makes my work feel deeper than the kind of work done by others.

How often should I get a massage?
This depends on a number of issues; if you are seeking relief from chronic pain, it is probably a good idea to have 3 or 4 massages within 2 or 3 weeks. This way you will know fairly quickly if massage can provide you with the relief that you are seeking. For those who seek relief from the stresses of everyday living and and or general relaxation, once a week or once every other week will suffice. Ultimately though, you’re in charge and you know your needs, your schedule and your budget better than anyone else.

What about massage as a strategy for aging?
With age, joints, tendons, muscles and ligaments (bone to bone connections) all tend to lose their natural elasticity. Stretching as a component of Eddie’s Deep Tissue Massage can be of great benefit. If you are interested, Eddie will teach you safe, easy and effective stretches that you can do at home in 5 or 10 minutes that will assist you in maintaining the flexibility that you will experience on his table.

Can massage help sports performance?
Professional and amateur athletes both find that massage can be a useful aid in achieving peak performance. Restoring full range of motion and relieving tightness both help athletes stay limber and balanced for peak performance. Additionally, an effective way to prevent injuries is to promote muscle flexibility as well as balanced motion.

Is massage always appropriate?
No. There are a few medical conditions that are counter-indicated for massage. Before the first session you will briefly discuss your general medical history with Eddie and indicate any problems or concerns that you might have. In this manner your massage experience will be both safe and enjoyable.
